Geography

A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Our Geography curriculum aims to equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Sustainability and Climate Change are a key part of our curriculum each year. As our pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

At Henley CofE Primary School, we believe that Geography motivates and inspires our children to find out about the amazing world that surrounds them. Geography enables children to become global and sustainable citizens who are aware of the world we live in and can take an active part into contributing and protecting the world as they grow up. It also teaches children locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography and geographical and fieldwork skills starting them and their immediate locality before branching out and examining other parts of the world. This helps to develop children’s curiosity in both their immediate surroundings and places and environments in the wider world whilst also developing the skills necessary to interpret what they see and seek answers to further their knowledge and understanding.

The national curriculum for Geography aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes

  • Understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time

Are competent in the geographical skills needed to:

  • collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes

  • Interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

  • Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length

How are British Values taught from Geography?

At Henley CofE Primary School pupils are taught about British Values through Geography by learning about a variety of diverse communities. Our Topic in Autumn term - Celebrating Difference enables us to open our minds to new ideas and experiences. By being interested and open to the differences between us we can discover new ideas and ways of thinking as well as making new friends and experiencing different opportunities. It can also help us challenge stereotypes. In our Dream and Goas topic in Summer, each year group will study a particular moment or movement that is significant to our current time in the world.
